Summary Introduction

To evaluate: The importance of discovery of genes involved in cell division in the giant beefsteak tomatoes to producers of other vegetables and plants.

Concept introduction: Cell division is the process by which the cells reproduce and multiply in a geometric progression. Cell division is of two types namely mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is with respect to the somatic cells and meiosis is with respect to reproductive cells. Proper control of cell division is essential for the organism to grow well. The regulation of cell division is at the molecular level, wherein the genes are involved. These genes control the cell division depending on the type of tissue concerned. Not all cells divide in the same pattern. Also, the period for cells to divide and the threshold for the number of cells is controlled by cell cycle genes.
